NEBA Forum Recap: Solar Energy and Other Energy Sources We Need to Consider
The Network of Entrepreneurs and Business Advocates (NEBA) held our monthly membership meeting on September 26, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm at the Capital City Country Club. The featured program was a panel discussion on solar energy. Panelists were: Susan Glickman, the Florida Director of Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE); Abbie Mac Iver, former Vice President for Partnership for Affordable Clean Energy; and David Byrne, Assistant General Manager of Electric for the City of Tallahassee.
Topics discussed included the City’s 20 mw solar farm, which just broke ground and will eventually hold 90 acres of solar panels and provide energy to 3400 homes and businesses. A second solar farm is in negotiation for 2019, this one a 40 mw project. It was emphasized that the cost of materials for solar energy has dropped dramatically although some cautioned that some of the savings are in the form of government subsidies (which could change with the political tides). Consensus was that the best current options for energy are natural gas and solar, with the market changing constantly with more and more innovation.
